Melaka

The small city of Melaka is a fascinating place you can't miss if you're traveling in Malaysia. It is located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, and its historical city centre has been enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since july 2008. Because of its strategic location the city of Melaka was inhabited by many populations, first of all chinese, but also it was colonized by europeans (Dutch, British and Portuguese). For this reason the city still has a european architecture with a square and a church, but at the same time has strong malaysian and chinese traditions. Indians are a sizeable community and a small minority is represented by Kristang, people with partial portuguese ancestry.

La piccola città di Melaka è una meta affascinante, da non perdere se si sta visitando la Malesia. Si trova nella parte sud della Penisola Malay, ed il suo centro storico è stato nominato dall'UNESCO patrimonio dell'Umanità. Per la sua posizione strategica, Melaka è stata abitata nei secoli da diverse popolazioni, soprattutto cinesi, ma è anche stata colonizzata dagli europei (Olandesi, Inglesi, Portoghesi). Per questa ragione la città ha ancora in parte un'architettura europea, con una chiesa e una piazza, ma allo stesso tempo possiede forti tradizioni malesiane e cinesi. Gli Indiani costituiscono una cospicua comunità mentre una piccola minoranza è rappresentata dai Kristang, discendenti dei coloni portoghesi.

Elephants and fireflies

In Malaysia you have many different possibilities to be in touch with nature, some adventurous, some more touristic, anyway they are all great!One of these is the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre, not so much far from Kuala Lumpur . This centre was estalished at the end of the '80s and since then it has been a  home for many elephants, whose habitats have been lost to create space for agriculture or buidings. It is also an imporant touristic attraction, tourists can feed elephants, watching them in a show, and also having a bath with them!!!!

In Malesia ci sono moltissime possibilità per entrare a stretto contatto con la natura, alcune avventurose, altre più turistiche, ad ogni modo sono tutte fantastiche! Una di queste possibilità è rappresentata dal Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre, non molto lontano da Kuala Lumpur. Questo centro è stato istituito alla fine degli anni '80 per offrire una casa ai numerosi elefanti malesi, "sfrattati" dai loro territori per fare posto ad edifici e a campi di coltivazione. Oggi è una importante attrazione turistica, i turisti possono dar da mangiare agli elefanti, guardarli esibirsi in uno show e fare anche il bagno con loro!!!

A unique experience not to miss  in Malaysia is crossing a swamp on a raft in the night to see millions of fireflies!!It's a magical experience!!There are many places where this kind of activity is organized, I tried the Kampung Kuantan site...

Attraversare una palude di notte, su una zattera per vedere milioni di lucciole è un'esperienza unica, che non si può assolutamente perdere in occasione di un soggiorno in Malesia!! E' un'esperienza magica!!Ci sono diversi parchi che organizzano questo tipo di attività, io ho provato il parco di Kampung Kuantan...

Batu Caves

Malaysia is a Country where many different populations with different religions live. For this reason you can find churches, buddhist temples, mosques and also hindu temples. A few miles from Kuala Lumpur there's this old hindu temple, Batu Caves, once used by hindu people  who live in the Country to pray, now it's only a touristic place, anyway it remains an interesting spot. Watch out for monkeys!!

La Malesia è un Paese dove vivono molte diverse etnie ciascuna con la propria religione. Per tale motivo è possibile trovarvi chiese, templi buddisti, moschee e templi indù. A pochi chilometri da Kuala Lumpur si trova Batu Caves, un antico tempio indù, in passato luogo di culto per gli induisti che vivevano nel Paese, ora soltanto un luogo turistico, comunque interessante da visitare! Fate attenzione alle scimmie!!

Roman Holidays

 

The eternal city is not my city, but I've been living here for almost a decade now....so I think I can say Rome is my home. Dailylife here is quite complicated, and not always charming as Audrey's life in Roman Holidays. The best way to make peace with Rome after a week of work, traffic and smog, is to spend the weekend in the city centre doing touristy things....and suddenly you realize that with no doubt, no matter how much you can travel, you live in the most beautiful city in the world.

The following pictures show how I spent last saturday in the eternal city...

La città eterna non è la mia città, ma vivo qui ormai da quasi dieci anni, per cui penso di poter affermare che Roma sia la mia casa. La vita quotidiana a Roma è piuttosto complicata e non sempre affascinante quanto quella di Audrey in Vacanze Romane. Il modo migliore di fare pace con la città dopo una settimana di lavoro, traffico e smog è di passare il weekend in centro a fare cose da turisti...e all'improvviso realizzi senza ombra di dubbio che, non importa quanto tu possa viaggiare, vivi nella città più bella del mondo.

Places not to miss in Kuala Lumpur

Malesia, il nome evoca foreste lussurreggianti, spiagge bianche e deserte e animali selvatici. Tutto questo lo si può trovare certamente al di fuori delle grandi città ma sorprendentemente anche Kuala Lumpur nasconde, fra i suoi grattacieli e le super strade, piccoli paradisi naturali.

Fra questi i Lake Gardens. Io ho visitato il Bird Park e il Butterfly Park. Nel Bird Park si può fare una bellissima passeggiata circondati da una natura meravigliosa e centinaia di specie di uccelli diversi. Il Butterfly Park è più piccolo, ma vi permetterà di osservare da vicino migliaia di farfalle di tutti colori che svolazzano in un incantevole giardino...

Malaysia, the name evokes wild forests, white sand beaches and exotic animals. Obviously you can find all of this outside the big cities, but surprisingly, Kuala Lumpur hides little natural paradises among its skyscrapers and highways. One of these paradises is Lake Gardens. I visited the Bird Park and the Butterfly Park. In the Bird Park you can have a nice walk surrounded by a wonderful nature and hundreds of different kind of birds. The Butterfly Park is smaller, but it'll let you observe thousands of butterflies of different colours which fly around in an enchanting garden..

Kuala Lumpur

La Malesia è stata una delle tappe delle mie vacanze la scorsa estate. Motivi famigliari mi hanno portata in un Paese così esotico e lontano che onestamente non avevo mai considerato stilando la mia lista dei viaggi da fare. La città base del mio soggiorno malesiano è stata ovviamente la capitale, Kuala Lumpur. Il cielo grigio, il clima umido e afoso, lo smog e il traffico più terribile che abbia mai visto (Roma e Bangkok in confronto sono delle dilettanti!) mi hanno inizialmente impressionato negativamente. Ma Kuala Lumpur è una città che si scopre a poco a poco e la Malesia alla fine si è rivelata uno dei Paesi più affascinanti che abbia mai visitato.

Malaysia was one of my summer trips last vacation season. Family reasons took me to this, so far and exotic Country, that honestly, I've never had considered while writing my trips wishlist.
My base was obviously the capital city, Kuala Lumpur. The grey sky, the hot and humid climate, the smog and the terrible traffic (comparing to Kuala Lumpur, Rome and Bangkok are two little villages) firstly, impressed me not in a good way. Anyway, Kuala Lumpur is a city that you discover little by little and in the end Malaysia was one of the most charming places I've ever visited.

Una delle zone più interessanti della città è sicuramente Chinatown, da cui si può arrivare in breve al tempo al mercato centrale, dove è possibile ammirare il melting-pot di culture della città nella sua massima espressione...Malesiani, Cinesi, Indiani, Pakistani, musulmani, cattolici, laici...

One of the most interesting areas of the city is absolutely Chinatown, from which it's pretty fast to reach the Central Market, where you can observe the melting-pot of cultures of the city in its best expression...Malaysians, Chinese people, Indians, people from Pakistan, catholics, islamic and laical people...
